SOTA 2009 Outdoor Show Canberra

Review of SOTA – Canberra 2009 Outdoor Show.

Well being 2 year gap from my last visit. Weather was fantastic for Canberra this time of the year. Fresh mornings and bright sunny days.

The usual suspects were there with prominent stands being Oztrail, DMH, Primus, Black wolf, Sea to Summit, Clipper and with performance brands such as Mont, Vaude, Petzl, MSR, One Planet etc present.

Tent display area was pretty good, with over 80m tents around 150 tents on display. Good presence of kayak manufacturers and wholesalers sowing there wears.

Sentiment was that numbers were down, both in show buyers and general annual trade. However all seemed to be quietly confident the although not recession proof, may come out of this downturn faster than most industries with dollar strengthening and people increasing spending on outdoor activities rather than travel overseas.

A selection on new gadgets and products released, which really only come to market around August /September 2009. Will try gibe you update on when theses actually come to market.

Canvas and colours seem to be the theme, with all manufacturers increasing presence in canvas products and brighten up colour ranges in most gear. Eco green and rust orange seem to have their colour presence throughout.

Innovation is still very slow in the outdoor space of ours, with no real standout “Wow” concept or product.

In conclusion, pretty good show, some really good gear coming out and should make for an interesting new summer season 2009-2010.

Heading Outdoors is Good News in Tough Times

Outdoor sales on the Up.

With the downturn in the world economy, some good news on the horizon, with growth in the Outdoor industry in some areas, as people venture into the Outdoors.

Last year, Hyundai Department Store’s sales for “outdoor activity” products increased 11.7 percent from 2007. This year, the company has seen a 15.2-percent rise compared to the same period last year. The company plans to launch two new outdoor products stores during the latter half of this year.

“Even during the global economic crisis, products for camping and fishing are in high demand,” said Lee Dal-ho, the company’s outdoor products buyer.

Lotte Department Store’s outdoor product sales from January to March this year rose 26.1 percent on-year, while in 2008 their outdoor product sales rose 18.7 percent.

Outdoor clothing and bicycles sales seem to be heading up the growth, but with the state of the world economy, we will take anything.

Great to hear some positive business news around…
